New bypass mainline roadway is scheduled to open to traffic September 14.

ADOT is pleased to announce a major milestone towards completion of the Wickenburg Interim Bypass Project, with the opening of the mainline roadway to vehicular traffic scheduled for Monday, September 14. The new roadway, which follows the west bank of the Hassayampa River, will relieve congestion at the intersection of Wickenburg Way (US 60) and North Tegner Street (old US 93) in historic downtown Wickenburg.  Although the roundabouts and new Hassayampa River bridge have been open to vehicles for the last few months, the opening of the mainline roadway marks that the roadway portion of the project is nearing completion.

From September 14 until September 18, the connection of US 93 to North Tegner Street will be closed. During this time, motorist wanting to access North Tegner Street from southbound US 93 will be detoured to the new mainline roadway, then west on Wickenburg Way (US 60) from the southern roundabout. Northbound traffic on US 93 should access North Tegner Street from the southern roundabout.

Work to finish several remaining aspects of the project is expected to continue through early 2010. Remaining construction activities include demolition of the old westbound bridge over the Hassayampa River, which is expected to occur in October.  After demolition of the old bridge, construction will begin on a new pedestrian pathway that will connect the old eastbound US 60 bridge (which is being retained for pedestrian use) to the sidewalk near the McDonald’s Restaurant. The pathway will cross under the new Hassayampa River bridge, allowing pedestrians to cross the river without having to enter the traffic lanes on Wickenburg Way. ADOT will continue to alert the public to traffic restrictions as needed while the remaining construction activities are completed.

Construction began February 2008 on the Wickenburg Interim Bypass Project. The project will provide a new roadway that avoids the historic downtown, following the west bank of the Hassayampa River. When completed, the new roadway will divert regional traffic from Wickenburg Way/Tegner Street, relieving congestion and improving traffic flow on US 93 and US 60.

The project will include constructing two roundabouts, a new roadway embankment that will provide flood protection to adjacent properties, and new bridges across the Hassayampa River and Sols Wash. Landscaping and other aesthetic features will be installed at the new entrance to the historic district, creating a unique, inviting gateway to Wickenburg.

The improvements are funded by the voter-approved Regional Transportation Plan for Maricopa County.

Drivers should anticipate delays and allow extra time, or adjust travel to avoid closures and restrictions. ADOT appreciates your patience as we construct improvements to US 60 and US 93.

While ADOT strives to inform the public about planned roadway restrictions, during any complex construction project, there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Please visit our Web site for the most current information about planned and ongoing US 60/Wickenburg Bypass restrictions.

New Configuration ~ South Roundabout

This map shows the new configuration of the Wickenburg Interim Bypass, in particular what ADOT calls the “south roundabout.” The old bridge will be demolished and the other current bridge over the Hassayampa (where the wagon wheel designs are indicated) will be raised two feet to conform with flood control standards and will be given to the town as its foot bridge and for use in special events.
